Movie review : Raees

Title :  Raees Language : Hindi Year : 2017 Director : Rahul Dholakia Genre : Crime, Drama, Action IMDB Link Watch trailer on Youtube Lead Role : Shah Rukh Khan,  Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan Finally, an SRK movie that satisfied me after quite a while. While Fan had an exceptional first half, the movie lost connection post interval. And while Dear Zindagi satisfied the viewer in me, it cannot be termed as the star's movie, since Alia was the greater soul. But Raees is an all out King Khan show. The life sketch of a shrewd liquor baron, the socio-political landscape of the 80's Gujarat, all have been narrated by Rahul Dholakia with a realistic outlook with elements of drama to satisfy the average cine-goer and keep the cash box ringing. Nawazzuddin Siddiqui is a show stealer as the cop. The intro scene is one of the best in the movie. Ram Sampath has done a good job with music. Udi udi jaaye is my personal favorite. Though Raees is given a la...

The Original Transported Woman

The first attempt at something resembling to film-making. So there was this mannequin challenge contest at workplace. My friends and I thought - why not? One fine morning this plot hits my head - and it gets stuck. My supportive and talented group of buddies give the go ahead. Visualizes the shots in the head a thousand times. Goes for the shoot without any rehearsal. Unexpected change of venue of shoot. Moments of self doubts. Action Cut Camera for the first time. Highly amateurish making. Movie themes for background score. Utter lack of knowledge regarding editing. Still, first work would always remain special. Thank You Vimal, Antony, Arjun, Swetha, Pooja, Sruthy and Revathy. Romantic Girlfriend and the Realistic Spouse

'Waves waves...Oh the gigantic sea waves!' Thus began my very first attempt at verse (or at-least it is the first one I can remember). I was in class six. You see class six marked an year of transition - from primary to secondary schooling. We had new subjects, new teachers. Our English tutor was the much feared Joseph Sir, who turned out to be much caring and loving in reality. I strongly believe that the English teachers - Joseph Sir, Indira Ma'am and the late Radhakrishnan Sir - played an immense role in identifying my penchant for English and opening the windows of creative writing within me. Coming back to the "wave poem" - it is just a silly poem filled with rhymes - like any other school going kid is expected to write. The same year I remember Joseph sir asking each of us to write a poem as some sort of an assignment. Our English classes were during the seventh period according to the timetable. And so for the assignment, I wrote another short poe...

Left.....Right

2016 is in its last few minutes. At least that's the case in India. The news guy told us that New Zealand has already welcomed 2017. That's the funny thing about time. It is relative. Like most things are. Pardon me  monsieur, for I am not an absolutist. I am not even sure if i would be able to complete this before 2016 ends here. It does not matter anyway. What difference does a few minutes make? The earth keeps on rotating. The universe probably keeps on expanding. We keep on breathing.  There are a lot of 'Fuck You 2016' memes floating around. It is funny how we have decided to blame a period of time for our actions and the state we find ourselves in. (Okay I did not make up that last sentence. I read it somewhere.) Talking about 2016, was it actually that bad? I don't know. If you are cringing about how some of the right wing fringe groups have bestowed upon themselves to act as the defenders of nationalism and patriotism, then you shoul...

Around The World In Eight Days

Hey. Oh Hi. I see that you are writing again. Well Yes I am trying to. I would appreciate it if you would not peek over my shoulders. Shouldn't it be  'Around The World In Eighty Days'? It would have been the case if I were Jules Verne. Seriously, I would like some privacy while writing. Oh I get it. You are writing about the film festival, aren't you? Thank you for spoiling my write up. I was keeping the IFFK twist for the end. Come on. It's elementary, Watson. Go on with your piece. Happy writing. ****************************************************** Around the world in eight days. The ticket cost you just five hundred rupees. What an irresistible offer. I signed up without much thought. So did thousands of others. The trip was to be in the month of December. We waited impatiently. Enter December. Begin festival. We reached the launch pad half an hour early. All seats were already taken up. Rest of us ushered ourselve...

Movie review : Dear Zindagi

Title :  Dear Zindagi Language : Hindi Year : 2016 Director : Gauri Shinde Genre : Drama, Romance IMDB Link Watch trailer on Youtube Lead Role : Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Ali Zafar, Yashaswini Dayama, Ira Dubey It is all about loving one's life. It is about two roads diverging in a yellow wood and taking the one commonly traveled by, because it is probably the more easier path. Kaira is the soul of the movie. She is young. She is independent. She is a talented cinematographer. And she is hot. We assume her life is picture perfect but obviously it is not. She is going through depression. She doesn't seem to know how to handle her love life. We see the reasons as the plot progresses through the sessions between Kaira and her "dimag ka doctor" Jahangir Khan. These sessions take the story forward. The entire premise is simple, not trying to be preachy or bigly philosophical. Sometimes it shifts into a rom-com with no melodrama. Overall, t...
