Mix Tape

This is a personal write up. Since people are generally interested in other people's affairs, I thought why not blog it as well.

So the music day happened last Wednesday. For someone who is into songs whenever conscious, every day is a music day. Still, June 21 made me think of the songs that are very special to me. I just wanted to think across years, picking up songs and the memories associated to it, and put it all together in one place. Like a mix tape of sorts.

I am not sure if the concept of mix tape is relevant anymore.
It once was, when all you had was ordinary tapes. Now with everyone's shuffle playlists boasting of more diversity than any mix tape could possibly have, mix tapes have lost their charm.

1. Vaseegara - Minnale

Tamil movie Minnale came out in early 2000s, back when I was a school going boy. The innocent type. The shy-to-talk-to-girls type. I hear this song, and it's like I am transformed into a magical world. No other piece of music have had such a captivating effect on me like this. The music was divine. Even today it feels the same. Nothing has changed. I remember this one time when the song came on TV. Till then, I'd only heard it. Obviously I wanted to see the visualization. The song was perhaps a tad too intense for a kid, anyway my father made me change the channel much to my disappointment. My curiosity would get the better of me later.

2. Mitwa - Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

2006. The night where my undying love for Bollywood songs began. We were on our school trip. To Kanyakumari. My first school trip. Bus started at night. Me and my friend Denny sat right across where our mutual crush had sat. Palpable excitement would be an understatement. They kept these amazing songs which I later realized where from movies like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Don among others. The songs were a delight to the ears. I sang along without even knowing what 'Mitwa'' meant. From that till now, Bollywood songs have been so dear to me. Not all.

3. Nenjukkul Peidhidum - Varanam Ayiram

Adolescence is that time where you have those wonderful notions about romance. And most of us would have at-least one song that would aid us in the imagination of the wonderland of love. I had this melodious track which would fill my heart with sheer delight each time I plugged in. Those "Shanthi Shanthi" portions ...oh! I have lost count of how many times I have listened to this amazing song.

4. Demons - Imagine Dragons

Disclaimer : I'm not really into Western music. I don't know why but I am not really able to enjoy them as good as I enjoy Indian songs. Of course there are a few which are special to me.
Of the lot, this particular band stands out.
I can't  explain why but somehow I'm in love with almost every single track of this particular band. Demons, Gold, Shots, Believer, RadioActive, Thunder and even more... Most of them touches my soul.

An ode to Imagine Dragons

5. Woh Jahaan - Rock On 2

A movie that revolutionalized the music scenario of the entire nation, including the simple me. Though popular for its amazing pop songs, the one offbeat "Tum Ho Toh" lingered longer.

The movie is one of my favorites. So I was excited when I heard about the sequel. And I did like it though many of us didn't. And this particular song was Magik. The simple music, meaningful lyrics...it has a this mystical soothing effect that grows on you.

And.. I love Farhan's broken voice :)

Book Review : Scion Of Ikshvaku

Author : Amish Tripathi Genre : Mythological Fantasy Published On : 22 June 2015 Watch trailer on Youtube Buy Online! As the makers put it, this first installment of the Ram Chandra series is the most awaited literary blockbuster of the year. The frenzied wait had its effect on me, as I had pre-ordered a copy, days before its release. Obviously, the most weighted factor which prompted me into this craze was The Shiva Trilogy, the previous work of the boring banker turned happy author. Shiva Trilogy achieved its cult status for two major reasons: a) the plot being discussed offered a welcome change from the modern day love stories that had mushroomed up in the post Chetan era. b) The author had meticulously researched through Vedas and other ancient texts, and had reconstructed the very image of Shiva, into a very capable man rather than a miracle performing God. To quote the First City, Amish had succeeded on reintroducing Hindu mythology to the youth of t...

The Plan

The son went and sat near his father. “It’s been a while, dad. How are things going?” “It really has been a while, hasn’t it? I stopped following time since God knows when.” “That’s quite unbecoming of you, dad. For what I know, you were someone who used to measure time and plan accordingly. Shall I say shrewd?” “I prefer meticulous. And yes, I used to measure time – every ounce of it. Each of my actions were prudently strategic. I wanted the best for myself and my folks.” “Are you telling me even I were a result of your deliberate planning? Interesting.” “You? Of course. Especially you. There was a time when my whole life was centered on you. I have had immense plans for you, even before you were born. Do you think you just happened to be born in the month of May?” “I am quite familiar with the nine months’ infancy phase, dad. I believe that though I came out only in May, I began to exist sometime in August, perhaps.” “That’s a way to look at it, righ...

Chennai Tidbits

‘2/14, Salvation Army Guest House, Doveton St, Chennai’  this address followed by a ten digit phone number was all that I had of Mr. Nageshwar Rao, who was to become my roommate in my new 'home' that Chennai was. Vipin Das is my name, an employee of All India Radio, and I had been transferred from New Delhi to Chennai only a few days ago. So there I was, just outside the Chennai Central, drained and haggard after the grueling train journey that gifted me two sleepless nights. I approached an auto-rickshaw with baggage in my hands, and showed him the address I had. He asked me to get in, and I was traveling through the South Indian metro, a first time in my life. It was only six in the morning, and the city was just waking up. Some young professionals, probably long distance commuters, security guards, newspaper boys on cycle, trucks and light traffic were all I could see on road. I took out that card and dialed Mr. Rao. No response. Maybe he was still sleeping. After all, it...
